While you’re planning to book a charter bus with America Bus Reservation, it is useful to know how long a bus driver can legally drive in the US. We’re here to inform you and to protect you and your groups through the driving regulations of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Department of Transportations.
Charter Bus & Mini bus Driver: Driving and Off
Duty rules in the United States
- Consecutive time on duty: 15 hours max per day
- Daily driving limit: 10 hours max per day, after 8 consecutive hours off duty.
- Breaks: 30 minutes break after 8 hours of driving.
- Consecutive time off duty: 8 hours before and after driving.
- Weekly driving limit: 60 hours max per week on duty, can be increased to 70 hours in an 8-day period for carriers that do not operate every day of the week.
Charter Bus & Mini bus Driver: Driving and Off Duty rules in Canada
- Consecutive time on duty: 14 hours max in a 24 hours period.
- Daily driving limit: 13 hours max in a 24 hours period.
- Breaks: 30 minutes break after 8 hours of driving.
- Consecutive time off duty: 10 hours in a 24 hours period.
- Weekly driving limit: 70 hours max per week on duty.
Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Regulations
Charter buses and minibuses are equipped with an Electronic logging device that can track the drivers activity (Driving time, off duty and on duty time…) . The ELD regulations apply to most motor carriers of passengers and their drivers who are required to keep a record of duty status. These regulations apply to drivers domiciled in Canada and Mexico when operating within the United States, unless they qualify for an exception.
